The Path that led to Darkness
Ted started down his path to Darkness when he met and fell in love with Stephanie Brooks. Stephanie Brooks was from a rich Californian family that was successful in all their chosen areas, Ted Bundy was not. Ted had often thought that he wouldn't be able to fit into her world, but he was willing to try. Ted found one of the only things that he and Stephanie had in common and use it to try and get to know her. That one thing was Skiing. Ted hitched a ride with Stephanie up to the mountain summits east of Seattle. Ted and Stephanie talked on the way back from this day of Skiing, Ted was becoming obsessed with the dark haired beauty, whom he secret knew out-classed him. Ted was over-joyed when Stephanie began to spend more time with him, a relationship that Ted had longed for was the product of their time spend together in the latter part of 1967. The 2 had many small dates from the time that they met in Spring 1967 til Fall 1968 when Stephanie tired of this College romance that seemed to be going no where. Stephanie knew that she only had a short period of college left when she began to tire of the weight that Bundy put on her and hoped that the romance would die of malnutrition when she returned home and started to work. She was wrong, Bundy won a Scholarship to Stanford in Intensive Chinese for the Summer of 1968, which was just a short drive from Stephanie's Home. Stephanie continued to date him throughout the Summer of 1968, but as the time neared for him to return to Washington she abruptly ended the Relationship. Ted was devastated. Ted, trying to recover from his break up, started to work for Art Fletcher, a black candidate for Lieutenant Governor. Bundy was employed as the driver and very soon after, as Bodyguard. Bundy spent most of his time with Fletcher, sometimes sleeping in an adjacent room so that he was there to protect the candidate. Fletcher lost the Election. Bundy was extremely depressed as everything that he had counted on came crumbling down on him. Ted decide to make a road trip Arkansas in an effort to understand his background, who he was. It was there that he traced his birth back to Burlington, Vermont. He travelled to Vermont to attain a copy of his Birth Certificate, where he proved to himself that all he had suspected was true, Louise was infact his mother and he was born in a home for unwed mother. There was a large stamp marked "Illegitamate" hatefully stamped across the Birth Certificate, this hurt Bundy. He noticed that the section for him father was not left blank, Lloyd Marshall, a graduate of Pennsylvania University, an Air Force Veteran, a sales man that was born in 1916 filled the space of his father. All of this knowledge hurt Ted. His mother had lied to him, his father had abandoned him and the only person that he felt close to, Grandfather Cowell, was dead. All of this was the Path that led to Ted Bundy's own personal hell, but he had only walked half way down so far. Soon after all of this knowledge had been revealed to him, Ted picked up the pace. He started to apply himself. He went back to University and enrolled in courses for Psychology, he became involved with a young Divorcee with a 3 year child, Their names were Meg and Liane. It was also around this time that he got a study-work job in a Crisis Clinic in the Washington area where he actually worked with Ann Rule, who was a voluntary worker pulling the late shift on tuesday nights. Ann and Ted became fast friends. Ted seemed to be pulling his life together. He became the kind of person that any respectable woman would love to have her daughter involved with. The kind of man that Stephanie would want. Even though Ted was with Meg, he longed for his first one love, Stephanie Brooks. Years passed, Ted had some small encounters with Stephanie, not many but enough for her to notice and like the change in him. In the xmas of 1973, Ted had been spending a lot more time with Stephanie and was even engaged to her, all this, whilst he was with Meg. After months of treating Stephanie like she was a Queen, whining and dining her in only the best of venues and spending so much money and time on her, Ted suddenly froze up. He acted as if he had no interest in her. This surprised Stephanie, especially since he had been chasing her for 6 years. Stephanie went home a few days after xmas feeling very emotional and confused, then she relised that Ted had done what she had done to him years before. She was chilled when she thought of how he must have planned it all out, so sadistic.
Ted was at the end of his Path of Darkness at this stage, as he made his first kill shortly before his final break with Stephanie.
